Can You Believe That Brass?

February 7th, 2005 at 10:00 am

The one, the only, Jaron Brass is back on the web. Of course this alone wouldn’t really be news, if it weren’t for his being up to the same old tricks.

Jase Wells has once again fallen victim to the old Brass, read about it at his blog.

For anyone who is unaware of the history feel freee to read up. Starting with the naive suspicions moving on to a full blown community investigation via the comments, and a bizarre ‘arrest’? (With Video!)

define what you mean by ‘up to the same old tricks’ lee? i saw his site and it looks fine. doesnt look like anything questionable only that it is the same design he had last time. i know he stole it but it doesnt appear as if he is up to no good. i got burnt by him, but he does deserve a second chance. even i might give him one. his gallery is cool and so is his moblog, like all real stuff. it is nothing like what he had last year. why not leave it be for awhile and not rush to judgement?

  2. Lee Says:

I totally agree with what you’ve written about giving him a second chance. I’m not making any concrete judgements here. However it’s not true to say this ‘new’ site is his own work. His new site is a complete rip-off of Jase Wells latest design. This is the same site that he stole last time. If you read Jase’s posts you’ll find that Jaron hasn’t even changed the names of the CSS styles he’s declared. So there is no argument that it is heavily based on Jase’s site if not 100% stolen. That established, read Jaron’s first post where he talks of how long he’s been developing this new site, on how it is his work, and how he’s ported Moveable Type to Java Servlet Pages. That is a lie.

What bothers me is that he seems to be doing exactly the same thing as before, and that was already way past his second chance. My only motivation for posting a new entry is to make sure google doesn’t forget, and to give any future victims the information they need to come to their own conclusions.

also I’d like to add that I only became aware of Jaron’s ‘new site’ from an anonymous user posting a comment here, I’ve not been looking out for Jaron as for me the matter was closed.

P.S. Your “jaron survivor” is my “Arturo,” so to speak. They have the same e-mail, and I suspect the same AOL originating IP. I have my suspiscions about his true identity, but whatever.

I do not agree with what you say Lee. I read his first post and I do not see the same thing. I did not see any place where he said the design was ‘his’. He only talks about making the site dynamic and bringing ‘key pieces’ to jsp and also making the pages dynamic instead of static. I have use Drupal and GeekLog before and I do know that Movable Type is based on Mysql. I am sure it is easy to have a page read from a Mysql database and display something. There is code everywhere for that for php, asp, cgi and other languages.

The pages have to be dynamic in some way because there is a funny message that changes. I have also seen links change instantly and his news page is also dynamic and even works like other jhtml pages I have seen. Even his comment form works different then other Movable Type sites.

Maybe we both interpret what he said differently but I do not see him claiming credit for the design and I do not read him saying he made Movable Type over to jsp. It only look to me like little pieces were put together. He also added other things, like ichat and itunes which are cool and do not work like plugins I have found. Maybe he did write them?

As for design, they look similar but Jase and his new site are formatted differently. Jases website is now in a box where Jarons page is not. They look similar and I know Jaron used Jases wording but that is all changed from yesterday when I look and almost all blogs are in columns.

I want to look for other things but my IP is now blocked and Im not sure why. I e-mailed him and got a reply and aside from copying a design I do not think he is up to no good. I think it is all a big misunderstanding.

He IS up to no good.

I sent you the link to his new site. First of all, he started taking credit for my work. And when I wouldn’t give him a copy of our source code, he got pissed. He was telling people he setup all my systems and my site can’t function without him. Apparently, I’m such a hinderance to his work, that he has to wait for me to leave so he can get his work done. What a freakin’ liar. When he gets to my site, all he does is sit on his ass and surf the web. We work hard and are good at what we do. The last thing I need is for someone who doesn’t know how we do the things we do, to take credit for them. If you need further proof/information contact Jase, he has my email address.

    Shaun:
First of all, I never laid claim to any of your work. Using the same resources you used, I tried to come up with my own. Or, I told people (inluding MIH and MOH) that “Shaun F. @ ATM” had those scripts. If you want to corroborate that with the contacts at those sites, please go ahead. As for the source code, I never got upset… and you told me you’d give it to me at some point. As for setting up your systems, I hate to remind you, but MTG and I did set up all of them — prior to your re-imaging and re-configuration of them. Did you forget that? I never told anybody your site could not function without me so you made that conclusion/false statement up on your own. And you’re a hindrance to my work? Prior to all this happening I seemed to think we worked pretty well together. I was at your site while you were there — I had no other choice in the matter. It’s not like I had free access at any time, day or night. And what do I do when I get to your site? I’ve asked you all the time if there was anything you wanted me to do. You always reply “No”. In our saved iChat convo history (of which I have everything) you said “You know I never call you for technical support” a few times. Since my role at your site was primarily technical support, exactly what am I supposed to do? Make problems just to fix them? And from information I’ve gleaned, it appears you (or your staff) have managed to “pad” the truth significantly. Craig N. said all I do was watch “funny movies”. Well, he conveniently left out the fact that I would be eating lunch at the time. Sheryl N. said I blatantly refused to conduct a training. Wrong! JE at MTG is responsible for training, and I told her I would coordinate it with him once I had dates. She said after FCAT. I wasn’t doing training any more. As for everything else, I don’t know exactly what happened. But time and time again you’ve refused assistance in one way or another. You seem to leave out the fact that I was there every time you guys issued laptops on MY DAYS OFF (Saturday — to which I’ve still yet to receive any form of compensatory pay), or the late nights on those make-up Wednesdays. Or server issues I brought into Apple via Eric Z. out at Macworld. And everything else I’ve done since I started supporting you over 6 months ago. Those were for YOU Shaun, not for anybody else. As for the last part of your statement, I very strongly resent that. You came to ME for advice Shaun when things went awry with your servers and other issues. I was there for you, whenever you needed me. And I do know how you do things: I’ve been there since practically Day 1. You’ve shown me things, I’ve shown you things. We worked as a team. The LEAST you could have done is brought these things to my attention. However, you went behind my back and with your lies were a catalyst that caused me to lose my job. I have evidence (e-mails, IM logs, etc) that can corroborate and indemnify me and my actions. I never claimed your work as my own. I never had it to claim. Nor have I done any of the other things you and your staff have accused me of. I feel I did a good job at your site and I stand by the reputation I have earned working in SBBC. I hate to say that yours within the district isn’t exactly sparkling clean. You’ve been blacklisted and the like, so I really don’t know what your point in doing all this is. You know what people say about you and I will not elaborate on that in a public forum. As part of my formal complaint to SBBC and ATM over what has happened, the evidence I have (along with your comment here) will be submitted. I’m not wanting to get you nor anyone else in trouble. Nor will it change the outcome. I just want facts. And it appears that solid facts are the last thing that come out of ATM these days.

  8. Another Jaron Survivor Says:

Oh my god. He’s back… but at least this time he isn’t claiming to own a business or live in a penthouse or be a model.

And to think I just randomly did a search for his name on a whim. Just as long as he doesn’t call me, we’ll be good.

  9. Lee Says:

Yep he’s back. I received an e-mail out of the blue from him yesterday,

I’ve only skim read it and so haven’t yet replied. Basically though it seems to boil down to him asking me to remove all my posts about him so that he can find work, and so any future employer won’t google him and read all this.

I’d be happy to read any thoughts anyone might have on this. Originally I’d intended to leave this stuff here forever, perhaps one day editing it all down into a more concise form for posterity, but I am thinking about it again now.

I confess though my initial reaction is to leave it all online as I still found his tone to be patronising and wasn’t 100% assured of his repentance.

Perhaps I should only agree if he puts a permanent section on his own site about the saga? Then keep my pages on hold, ready to publish should he ever cover it up again?

    Ugggh.
He’s back. He stole Jase’s code. He stole Dylan’s photos again (http://www.dylanglockler.com/)… Lame. I wasn’t ready for a sequel. And it looks like this con needs more therapy.
